Welcome to the Blog
Happy Friday friends! Hope your week has been fabulous!
I am grateful for the incredible (and profound and productive) week I have had! (it’s about time…) I am even more thankful for amazing family, friends, associates and colleagues in my life, who love me, inspire me, encourage me, support me, pray for me, help me grow, personally and professionally and contribute to my happiness in life, so I can share and spread joy to all! Thank you everyone! You may have noticed, in my blog post of August 24, 2020, I mentioned I would feature more stories about some brilliant women who pursued their dreams later in life and succeeded! I am a woman of my word. Here is another story in my series on: “It’s never too late to pursue your dreams.” “Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts.” - Albert Einstein This is why I am sharing stories of inspiration and encouragement with you. :-) Today I am sharing Diane Gilman’s incredible story about pursuing your dreams! It is “A Real-Life Rags-to-Riches” story that is ahhh-mazing!! Diane Gilman is a famous American Fashion Designer, Television personality, Author and contributing writer. She is known as the “Jean Queen.” Here is a resilient, determined woman (I admire women who have these qualities) who survived major trauma in her early years as a child, with a violent, abusive father and a cold, unprotecting mother. In her words: “I sometimes describe my childhood as: “growing up Addams Family in a Leave It to Beaver world - long on abuse, but short on love.” Despite such a challenging homelife, she overcame her demons and made it her mission to help others follow their dreams. She was only two years old when she drew her first outfit; a polka dot dress on a stick figure. When she was eight years old, she had a sewing machine, which was a secret that hid under her bed; her first dresses were sewed during the night. This became her lifelong dream later in life to move to New York and become a fashion designer. (which she very successfully accomplished) While studying at the University of California, she established her first fashion store called “I’m a Hog for you Baby!” She became famous (she started out as a small-time”hippie designer”) in the 1960’s for dressing rock stars of America, designed custom made jeans for the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and more. Her neighbours in San Francisco were the Rock ‘n’Roll band Jefferson Airplane. How cool is that? I would have loved to live there! She moved to New York City in the 1970’s opening up a small boutique. She didn't earn a lot of money until the mid 1990’s, when she was in her late 40’s. I absolutely love her “Why.” Check out her book and bio. Diane wrote a book in 2013, called “Good Jeans: 10 Simple Truths about Feeling Great, Staying Sexy, & Aging Agelessly. It is predominantly biographical, yet she uses her story as an inspiration and encouragement to women, for them to pursue their dreams, thereby regaining a larger sense of self-fulfillment and entitlement, which sometimes has diminished due to constraints and expectations of society put upon women beyond a certain age. Yes!! I love this! In May 2014, which was the 20th Anniversary on the retail network HSN Home Shopping Network, Diane Gilman’s empire was worth more than $150 Million!! WOW!! Thee #1 selling fashion brand, also sells tops and sandals. The focus is on providing casual, comfortable clothing for women. Diane Gilman lives in a plus apartment overlooking Central Park and is in her mid-70’s! Pursue your dreams friends! The time is now! Have a fantastic weekend! 8/25/2020 0 Comments Chocolate and Tea pairings“There’s nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate. -Linda Grayson “I like all sorts of chocolate. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, anything.” - Author, Freddie Highmore “Life is like a cup of tea, to be filled to the brim and enjoyed with friends.” You may have noticed that I wrote in two previous Instagram posts; May 19th and June 10th...Did you know that there is such a ‘thing’ as pairing chocolate with tea? Well, it is a ‘thing’, for those who think only Chocolate and Coffee pairings are a thing. 😊 Here are a few suggestions for you to try at your next #teatime. Milk chocolate and Black Tea pair well. Chai, Darjeeling, Sencha or Ceylon Green are a delicious match. Drinking these teas black, without added milk is recommended as the milk is an ingredient already in the chocolate. White chocolate pairs well with Lemongrass, Jasmine, or Matcha Teas. When you choose a strong tea, it counterbalances the pure, richness of the white chocolate. Dark Chocolate with it’s full-bodied, earthiness and higher cocoa content is more palpable and powerful for the tastebuds. Pair it with an Indian Black Tea, a citrusy, Bergamot Earl Grey Tea or Milk Oolong Tea. It’s perfectly okay to add milk and sweeteners to your tea, though the flavours of your teas and chocolates will be purer when your tea is “clean” and “free.” Try it; you will enjoy a pleasing, tasty experience. Pairing tea with chocolate, is a delicious and pure delight and a unique way to enjoy the two together. The flavours, aromas and earthiness of these pairings are unique and delectable. Try a few combinations and discover what your discerning palate prefers. The combination of pure, high quality tea and high quality chocolate equals sheer pleasure. When you discover a pairing that you love, choose the absolute finest of both. Less is definitely more, when pairing top-shelf ingredients. Spend the most you can for your Chocolate and Tea pairing experience. You are worthy of the best!! Invite a friend or two (safely and socially-distanced) for an amazing #afternoontea with chocolate! 🤤 😋 What chocolate and tea pairings do you enjoy? Share your flavours in the comments. Thank you. With love and gratitude, Rita It's never too late to pursue your dreams. There are many stories of people who started late(r) in life, achieved their goals, and became hugely successful. To do this, we need imagination, inspiration, vision, and focus. Passion also requires patience. Anything is possible when you truly believe in yourself. This is something I am learning and re-learning everyday. We take on self-limiting beliefs in our childhood years. Most often it was our parents, teachers, or others who meant well, who told us we need to be realistic and "get a real job" because “dreams don't pay the bills.” I know that I fell into this trap and listened to others about who I should be, and what I should do. It took me years to figure out that it is my decision and mine alone: who I am, who I aspire to be, and what I want to and can do is up to me and no-one else. For too long, I considered the ideas and voices of others before my own. Those days are over! My voice matters, and I inherently know what my passions and dreams were and are! I also know that I can achieve them. When pursuing our dreams, passions, and goals, our age or other’s opinions need not influence our decisions. These are often excuses holding us back from accomplishing marvelous things. With dreams, we find a purpose. We work diligently and walk towards them. We have a reason to wake up and live life with joy. Working in a position we don’t like or are not aligned with makes us unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwilling to wake up and seize each day. Responsibility, continual improvement and motivation are key to achieving our goals and making our dreams a reality. We meet other dream seekers along the way and attract people who share our values. When we decide to “go for it” and pursue our dreams, we inspire others. We all have dreams, and each of us needs to pursue our own wholeheartedly, because we’re the only ones who can. Here are a few of my favourite poignant quotes about the pursuit of dreams. (Which one is your favourite?) “What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us.” — Julia Cameron “Do not plant your dreams in the field of indecision, where nothing ever grows, but the weeds of ‘what-if’.” - Dodinsky “ A life without dreams is like a garden without flowers.” - Author unknown “Life without dreams is like a rainbow without colours.” - Greyson Chance Imagine a rainbow without colours. How boring would that be?! We grow when we leave our safe environment, when we exit our comfort zone and jump into the deep end, immersing ourselves fully in discomfort. This is where growth happens. This is also where dreams are made. As long as you've got passion for the path you’re on, faith in yourself, and a willingness to get a little bit uncomfortable, the pursuit of your dreams and goals will bring you to a place of inner peace and gratitude. Only through these things do we find happiness. Fun fact: I am over 55 and am loving every minute of this journey. What are some things you’ve done late in life that you never thought you would achieve as a young person? Stay tuned for my next post, which will feature stories about some brilliant women who pursued their dreams later in life and succeeded! Please feel free to leave your own personal story in the comments. With love, Rita |
